Hey folks, if you are interested a few of us have started planning getting together to meet at the Bethlehem Celtic Festival Sept 24, 25, and 26th of this year to look over the site and see what 's available or if it even meets our needs for the 2008 activity. A Shrule Egan, Eamon, 3 Ravens (hopefully trying to get the weekend off) and I are planning on attending.
Who else can come? Let me know. I will be contacting the organizer for the Festival so Let me know if it's possible for you to come! It would be nice to have your input on these things.
Hope to have you there!
In all things Celtic,
Annabelle

I would like to attend. I like to hear more about the festival. It would be a blast to meet the people we talk to everyday in a netural setting.

Cheers,
Roisin angel_not.gif

Annabelle, the Civil war re-enacting group used to do that event every year, and we are still close to the organizers. I can get you a contact name and number if you wish.

I think I would like to try and come to this at least for one day, probably Saturday.

I guess I am out for this because I just noticed we are playing at an ADA benefit sad.gif

If you are planning on staying overnite in Bethlehem, both hotels, Comfort Suites and the Radisson, both of which are within walking distance of the fest, are already sold out.

We decided to stay outside of Bethlehem and we will be 4 miles away from the fest. We are all staying at the Hampton Inn & Suites Bethlehem. If you would like to hang with us, call (610) 868-2442 for reservations. Tell them at the reservations desk, that you would like a room near Mike Johnson. That way, we don't have to go hiking through the hotel looking for each other. They give AAA and other airline discounts and miles, so make sure you mention what ever you have.

There is a restaurant and BAR attached to the hotel. Also a heated indoor pool and workout room, if you have the will. biggrin.gif

I will be getting there Friday around 6PM. If you are coming Friday, let me know and we'll hook up.

I will be coming in Saturday morning early and meeting everyone at the Hampton Inn that A Shrule Egan spoke of earlier. We would love for everyone to come even if it's only Saturday so let us know if you'd like a contact phone number for me or anyone else.
In all things Celtic,
Annabelle

Eamon, please get that phone number for me. It would be great if I can speak to the organizers ahead of time.
Thanks

I'll second that, Ed. Especially, when you get really tired and you need to take a walk up the hill to the Bethlehem Brew Works. Nothing like a fresh brewed beer. beer_mug.gif beer_mug.gif thumbs_up.gif

Yep everyone should come if they can. This is real informal but even if it's only a few of us we should have a great time...
Send me a message and I'll send you my mobile number so I can give you any info you many need.

Posted by: Gaelic Bread 09-Jun-2004, 12:10 PM
By all means... everyone come on up to Bethlehem. USAKilts will be there in the main concourse as a vendor... making custom-kilts on-site.

It's worth the trip just for the incredible time!!!

Ok I've missed the entire conversation must be. When is this festival, where is everyone meeting and is their a campground somewhere close?

biggrin.gif

Posted by: Annabelle 11-Jun-2004, 10:14 AM
Liriel I have no idea about camping. I'm staying in the general area cause only going to be there 2 days. Also if we stay at the hotel we have use of the heated swimming pool! Gaelic Bread you coming too?
We all need to pick a spot to meet at!

Thanks for the info on the fest and the camping nearby. Just talked to hubby and found that we have children that weekend. Might be able to send them to grandma's house. I know I want to come but will let everyone know in a couple of weeks. Does anyone know how much the rooms are at the hotel?

Posted by: A Shrule Egan 13-Jun-2004, 09:02 AM
$94 - $125 a night without any discount. Depends on the type of room you want.

Here's the page, if you want to check out the hotel rooms. http://www.hamptoninn.com/en/hp/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=BLMPAHX

Does anyone else have a room number yet? Just wanted to be able to get a room next to everyone else.

The woman I spoke to originally, said we will be given rooms the day we get there. What she suggested doing, is when you make your reservation, tell them that you wish to have your room close to Mike Johnson (that's me). This way, they will have an idea of how many rooms need to be assigned for our little group and will try to keep us together. They will have a running list, off of my original reservation and will keep all of us stacked with me.

It sounded like that would work to me.

Anything else you need to know, let me know.

Posted by: Annabelle 14-Jun-2004, 10:22 PM
Liriel glad to hear you are coming! I need another woman's opinion as to whether this would be an acceptable site for the 2008 get together. Looking forward to seeing you there.
I'll need you to help keep me from hurting Eamon and Egan.

Hubby and I are planning on coming. We don't know if we're going to get a room or camp. I definitely know we will be coming in Saturday morning. Does anyone know where we will all be meeting and what time? I do have a map of the festival so just let me know by which event or booth.

See you all there.

Posted by: A Shrule Egan 16-Jun-2004, 04:08 PM
Liriel, we still have about 3 months before the fest. We don't have to pick a place as of yet. We may have more people coming and we can figure out a place when we have a good idea who is coming.

We could always meet at my favorite place in Bethlehem, The Bethlehem Brew Works, which is one block up from the fest. smile.gif beer_mug.gif beer_mug.gif

Okay, I've made my reservations at the Hampton Inn. I'll see you all there on Saturday. We will probably come in in the morning and work the festival first then check in later. I will see you all then.

Posted by: A Shrule Egan 29-Jun-2004, 03:45 PM
Since you are going straight to the fest, when the date gets closer, we can figure out a time and place to meet at the fest. We need to wait and see how many are coming and work it from there.

If you have a wine glass, bring it with you. We'll be popping open a few bottles in the night time, and it ain't Boones Farm!!

Everyone coming to this event!

I received a package from Jason at the convention center yesterday. There was a map in there of the area. I'll make copies and leave at the front desk for all at the Hotel. Just tell him you are with Celtic Radio group and they will give you a copy..

Hope to see more of you there!

Edit: I just found this ----> http://www.stormfront.org/forum/showthread.php?t=89159 while looking for info on it and what everyone said disturbs me. what the hell is up with white nationalists going, it's so random. buttholes.

I find this very disturbing that these type of people want to turn something so wonderful into a political rally. I understand that everyone has a right to their own feelings but please don't push your beliefs on others at a public festival.

Guess that idiot must have had the sheet over his eyes, if he was at the fest last year and the year before. He sure wasn't watching the Highland Games. There were two guys that were competing, that were black. I believe, one was born and raised in Ireland and the other, in England. Plus, mixed into the crowd, was just about every nationality you could imagine. It's open to the general public with no admission. Anyone can walk through the fest.

This guy is a bozo and shows exactly where his brains are!!

Annabelle

Posted by: Annabelle 08-Jul-2004, 07:51 PM
Fran are there any pavilion's in the area that we could use for meeting spots?

Annabelle

Posted by: Fran19 08-Jul-2004, 08:01 PM
I'm a wandererererer (er). I go wherever the music is good at that particular time (or to whatever vendor my wife wants to check out). I also have a tendency to wander up to Donegal Square (local Irish shop) and the local cigar store (sorry, Annabelle. There's not much better to me than a good scotch with a good cigar).

There are 4 pavillions with stages. 2 in the Monnacaccy Moor (one end), the main stage and pavillion (center of the grounds), and one on the other end of the grounds (the name escapes me). There is also a Civil War reenactors camp, between the Moor and the main area. And there is the field for the Celtic games between the main area and the other end (I know, I'm being very specific here).

Plus there is the main attraction - the whiskey tasting tent! beer_mug.gif

Vendors are grouped throughout the grounds, with food and beer vendors near each of the pavillions.

Anyway, plenty of landmarks that can be chosen to meet at.

Posted by: Annabelle 08-Jul-2004, 08:15 PM
So Fran, can you suggest a place that is very obvious for all of us to meet at since most of us don't know what each other look like?

Mac, we need T-shirts!!!!
Any time to look into these?

Posted by: A Shrule Egan 08-Jul-2004, 08:22 PM
Behind the soundboard of the main performing tent or the Bethlehem Brew Works, are my suggestions.

Sorry I'm a little late with this reply - been off having fun with the guys.

The main pavillion is easily found, but predictably crowded. Especially in the evening. I don't know where the Bethlehem Brew Works is so I can't comment on how easy it is to find.

We certainly should have some kind of marker to distinguish ourselves. I'd say to look for the big guy in the kilt, but that is not nearly the distinguishing factor there that it is elsewhere.

Maybe the first one there can hold up a large sign saying "I love the British" biggrin.gif

Posted by: Annabelle 12-Jul-2004, 08:05 PM
Although those are some wonderful ideas Fran, it may be a little confusing in the crowd.
Can you think of anything better? we do love the Brit's but I think everyone would just smile if we walk around yelling that!

Think some more love!

We probably should stick with the hotel....then walk over to the festival!

I'm coming from York...anywhere on your way? Haha if not that's okay, I'm not sure if I'll be (know it sounds cheesy) allowed to go.

And this is probably a stupid question, but is it the Bethlehem in Northhampton or in Clearfield?

The one next to Allentown. Sandwiched between Rts. 22 and 78, not far from the New Jersey border.

We are actually north of you so if we meet in the middle somewhere we could go in together. Just let me know if you are going and I'll get the directions and the half way point between the three places.

Posted by: Annabelle 25-Jul-2004, 09:11 AM
Groupie's we are only 62 days away from all of us getting together!

Has anyone picked a place to meet in case the person isn't staying at the hotel?

I don't think Eamon is so we need to find a location to all meet and I'll bring name tags so we can put our names on so we know who each other are....

Mac hasen't had time to investigate T-shirts yet with his "to do" list being so long but hang in there, we still have 62 days.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone. Especially that pool in the hotel. It's been too long since I was in the water. Anyone want to see a whale float on her back... biggrin.gif

yea Liriel let's see! Want to see a whale float face down!!!!
that's me!

I'm bringing homemade chocolate chip cookies for everyone to last 3 days! We have a chocolate chip cookie monster in our group so we have to make sure he's well supplied!
Can't wait to have us all togther. There will be a liquor bar in my and 3Raven's room to come by for a drink anytime (preferrably late in the evening). During most of the time we will be seeing the festival. Also everyone bring their ugliest pj's so we can elect who has the ugliest ones!

I'd bring my Collectors Edition of Peckery, the Sock Monkey socks but I think Annabelle will try to have a conversation with them after having a few Makers Mark, while she's crawling on the floor.

No one has a tent or is even prepared to get into that this time. I hope in the future we can.
Mac's working on T-Shirts now so the banner will have to wait.
Tent for next go around.

Well Becky, the pool is hidden way in the back of the hotel and there isn't a lifeguard. Don't let me stand in your way, if you prefer to swim in natures way.

Would you like to try this before or after we all have a few drinks? beer_mug.gif beer_mug.gif biggrin.gif

I am definitely looking forward to this trip. I might have to come on my own though. Hubby found out that he has a audit at work that week and doesn't know if it's going to spill into the weekend. As for the kids I think they're going to opt to go to Grandma's house. Unless of course I tell them there's a pool.

Just to let you know, the kids have opted to switch weekends with the "other parents" so it will just be me and hubby.

He says that he's going to stay in the pool all the time, so I'm s.o.l. for a festival buddy.

Becky, just tell hubby, the Bethlehem Brewery is right next to the fest. He can make as many trips as he likes during the day. Then, he can hit the pool in the evening.

In between all the bathing and booze keep an ear open for King Chiaullee (Music Heads) from the Isle of Mann, they're a five piece band playing a mix of Celtic music.

The have played at L'orient and all the other festivals around the British Isles. This I believe is their first trip to the USA so give them a cheer please.

I don't know where you got that clock from but it's not the one I sent you. Mine says, It is 39 days, 13 hours, 50 minutes and 58 seconds until September 24, 2004. As of this moment.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the board, but I've been reading all your posts about the Celtic Classic, and just wanted to give you some pointers. I've been going to the fest for several years now and it is a total blast! It is free but you must buy tickets ($.50 each) to purchase food or drink which can get a bit expensive.

FYI, there is very little parking in Bethlehem. The city is on a hill, with the festival in the valley. All the streets around the festival are mainly residental with some small businesses, with bridges connecting the hills and over the Lehigh River. Parking is at a premium. If you look around in the neighborhoods, you will find small parking lots that charge $5-$10 for the day. Good luck finding parking on the street, where there are many 2 hour meters and not many free spaces. You can find free parking if you arrive early in the morning. (My suggestion). Remember it gets really, really crowded and might be difficult for you guys to find each other at the festival. I would carpool from the hotel, so you don't need as many parking spaces. Just remember where you've parked!! It is easy to wander around Bethlehem lost after several pints! And every hill looks the same!

The Bethlehem Brew Works is on the corner of Main and (I believe) Broad Streets. Really good food and some very interesting beers. (Mid price range). Donegal Square, a great celtic store, is down a few blocks on the opposite side of Main Street. Main street is loaded with venders, music and food not to mention some really neat shops. You can follow the crowd down into the festival from there. You can't miss it, huge striped tents all over the place, with the sounds of highland pipes rising up from the trees.
The music is fantastic, there's also Step and Highland Dancing Also, Highland games, and pipeband competions,(there is a fee to watch in the grandstand for these events but you might be able to get a good spot at the fence on the opposite side to watch for free). Wish I could go this year and meet you guys but my husband's band Barleyjuice is playing at Irish weekend in Wildwood, NJ. Another insanely crowded festival but lots of fun too!
I know you'll have a fantastic time, hopefully Barleyjuice will be playing there next year!!

Hope this helps a bit.
Cheers,
Nancy

Nancy,
Thanks for the awesome info. yes I wish you and your hubby's band will play there next year...we'd all love to meet with you.

Is there somewhere you can say would be a good general meeting place at the festival? Like a tower or clock or something that stands out?

Thanks for all the info, sorry we will miss you!

Becky, what time are you planning on showing up for Saturday?? If you come early enough, you can bring your luggage in to one of our rooms and you can check in, later in the evening.

I believe that Eamon (Ed), will try to come on Friday, after he finishes with a meeting that he has to attend. He wants to hang out with us during the fest and afterwards, back at the hotel. He will not be staying at the hotel. He said, he will commute back and forth, since he doesn't live to far away.

Becky, Josie, Annabelle and I will be checking in on Friday. The fest opens at 9:30 (I doubt we will be there first thing in the morning), so, after we finish with breakfast, we will eventually head downtown. My guess is, we probably won't head down ther til about 10:30. Do you think you can make it to the hotel before that? And give yourself some extra time to unload and bring your stuff into one of the rooms til you can check in later.

I've been going to the Celtic Classic in Bethlehem for a little over a decade now. For a free festival it's one of the best in the region. Two years ago I got to see Wolfstone there and then hung out with them in the brewpub afterwards. I've also been fortunate enough to discover new favorites there over the years such as Seamus Kennedy and a great fiddling duo from the Isle of Mull - Tabache. The Glengarry Bhoys keep me coming back year after year. This year they are only playing on Friday night since they are heading up to the NH Highland games Saturday and Sunday. There's plenty of vendors and food to choose from, and such a variety of entertainers that nearly any age can enjoy. I highly recommend this fest. Since the 'park' they use to host the fest is directly below the main drag of Bethlehem, you also have the convenience of some local eateries, lovely little shops and some good hotels. Bethlehem is very 'walkable' and is quite charming. I'll be there Friday night for the Bhoys concert! biggrin.gif

It's not looking good for coming even for the day. I can't leave my baby girl with a kennel because she has behavioral problems. I usually leave her with my mom but she is going away this weekend. That's why we won't be able to come.

It really sucks because I've been planning this for two months. But I'm definitely planning for go for the 2008 Reunion. That one I'll be able to bring the babies because I'll be bringing the camper.

Have fun all.

Back from Bethlehem!!

We had an awesome time. We have a ton of pictures to post and Annabelle single-handedly, added much to the economy of the Bethlehem area (wait til she gets home and finally figures out how much she spent rolleyes.gif ).

We made contact with just about every band that played there and we have some new music to add from some plus some others will contact Mac the usual way.

Glengarry Bhoys (triple encore), Wolfstone and Tartan Terrors smoked the fest. Charlie Zahm and Seamus Kennedy were marvelous, as usual. Both Charlie and Seamus are doing Celtic cruises for their fans and you can check the details on their web pages.

The weather was perfect all three days and the place was packed. The organizers were figuring that almost 300,000 came this year. They had more vendors there this year than I have ever seen before and it looked like people were spending money. Rocky, at U.S.A Kilts was there and wanted everyone to know that he will gladly help you out with all your kilt needs. Let him know you are from CR.

We will have more on the fest when we get all the pictures organized and ready to post. Should take about a week or so, before you start seeing pictures.

I am so glad that you all had great weather and the best time. Just wish I was able to join you. But fate gives you a reason for everything.

My husband became very ill on Thursday. Flu like symptoms and bad stomach cramps.

Well I will be able to come to the next one though.

If there was ever a reason to attend the fest in Bethlehem, PA. in 2005. It was just announced that the USA National Highlander Championships will be held there. You can bet there will be more than the 320,000 who attended this year because of the importance of this event.

By the way, this is what the fest looked like a week prior to the event. The remnants of one of the hurricanes came through eastern PA. and flooded downtown Bethlehem. The red and white striped tent is the main performing tent under 8 feet of water. The town of Bethlehem and many volunteers worked day and night to clean everything up before the start of the festival on Friday night.
