Irish family kilts were based more on spefic solid colour. The Irish Kilts club is in the process of researching this further. http://www.somebody.to/modern.htm

But yes, the Irish did wear kilts. After all most of Ulster was made up of Scots. I would suggest that you make further inquiry at www.xmarksthescot.com a kilt fourm (free to join) as there are quite a few people there that could tell you more about the history of the Irish and Kilts.

There's a difference between the tartans and the kilts.

Are there historical Irish Kilts? Not really. It's a pretty modern thing for the Irish. Naturally with the number of Scots-Irish, there will always be a debate.

Are there historical Irish tartans? Not many. The Ulster is OLD. The other regional, county and national tartans are from the 1990's. The solid Saphron kilt has some good history.

You can always head to the website XMarksTheScot to get information on everything "kilts". There's none of the talk about other garments or affiliations. It's all about kilts and tradition. Enjoy.
