On a different note and new event. I guess the law finally caught up with
O. J. Simpson.

The shadow of a murder case known as "the trial of the century" hung over a Las Vegas courtroom Friday as O.J. Simpson was sent to prison for up to 33 years for what many considered a small-time heist of his own memorabilia and family heirlooms.

The judge insisted her sentence for the fallen football hero was not retribution for the 1994 slayings in Los Angeles in which he was acquitted, but to relatives of Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, it was.

Fred and Kim Goldman, the father and sister of the slain man, gloated over Simpson's sorry end and said they hoped their endless pursuit had pushed him "over the edge" into committing an armed robbery last year in a downscale Las Vegas casino hotel room.

To read yesterday:
The gun rampage of a 17 years old young man is shocking Germany. Tim K. killed in the small town Winnenden (Baden-Württemberg) 15 people before he shot themself.
Horror, consternation and not lastly guesswork about the motive of the young man shaped the hours after the bloody deed. At 9.30 a.m. squalled the young man into the school-house, where he finished the junior high one year ago. Heavily armed and dressed in a black combat gear he went targeted into two class-rooms and opened the fire wordlessly. Nine pupils and three teachers died. After this he escaped from the school-house (where were r.a. 580 pupils), shot a staffer of a psychiatric clinic in the neighborhood and steal a car to continue his escape. In the small town Wendingen (40km far from Winnenden) expired the escape - the gun rampager was stopped by the police. On the parking-area of a car dealer he killed a stafferof the car dealer a costumer and lastly he shot themself.
The gun which carried the young man came from the legal private arsenal of his father.

The same theme, today:
Withdrawn, unobstrusive, depessive - in this kind describe acquaintances the gun-rampager. It's a guesswork yet, if the culprit announced his plan in the internet:
"I'm serious about it. I have guns here. I'll go to my school tomorrow. You'll hear about me tomorrow - learn the name of the place: Winnenden" This could be the announcement face to face with a chat-partner from Bavaria - said a police speaker. "But maybe this could be a fake of a very cynical copycat... there are already six cases currently" admited the police yesterday at night.
The sad fact is: He went to the school killed nine pupils, three teachers and at his escape three persons more before he shot themself.
Tim K. was considered as withdrawn, unobstrusive and friendly. Schoolmates poked fun at him an the teachers ignored him. Also he was a depressive gun nut. Tim K was a practiced marksman and his father picked up him very often to his shooting club. In his room at home the young man kept a number of airguns.
"Sometime - on the playground - he shot on each other with guy from his class." said an ex-schoolmate. In the basement of his house the father set up a shooting gallery.
"For some months he spent a lot of time to play ego-shooters on his computer" the schoolmate said. "Nobody accepted him, so he sit at home all days long on the computer"
Several times the young man was treated for depressions in a hospital - a planned ambulant therapy he didn't start. His parents knew about his suffer but they didn't confident that he is able of doing such things.
Tim K's parents and his 14 years old sister on own initiative leaved their home meanwhile. They haven't police protection.
Tim K.'s father maybe will get a proceeding (illegal gun possession). The weapon involved Tim K. has stolen out of the parential sleeping room. In fact the father was very careless by lock his guns...

I haven't to comment anything....what a world we live within...

Unfortunately it is destined to get worse! Just one person legally armed would have stopped the carnage. As I recall the article, the police found him dead in a parking lot of self inflicted wounds. So much for police "protection." We are all on our own until the police arrive. A couple of min. can be a long time if you are defenseless, and most places 20 to 40 min is the norm.

The 17 year old committed the crimes, the fire arm didn't.

Hi Patch,
in principle I can agree with you - that's an ability to stop such carnages. But in my opinion the problem isn't how to stop but how to prevent. Sure do you know that this case in Winnenden isn't the first of this kind - there are a lot of gun rampages around the world. (Ex-pupils squall their schools and have a carnage there. When I look at these rampages I see everywhere some analogies to Winnenden:
All these people got psychic problems, all these people were gun nuts and all these people played a couple of time before ego-shooters excessive until they lost the relation to the reality...
In Germany is started a political discusssion (once again) about the prohibition of ego-shooters. But I think that's the same thing as the discussion about the firearms.
QUOTE (Patch @ 13-Mar-2009, 11:05 PM)
...The 17 year old committed the crimes...
and I complete: ...the ego-shooter didn't.
In my opinion is this kind of discussion a way to detract from the real problem and to find a a easy way to pass the buck to something that don't answer back...
I think the real reasons stand in our community - in handling our youth, in permanent pressure to preform, in the social marginalization of people with psychic suffers - in a nutshell our handling the people they don't meet the demands, the community want of somebody. We have here a word for this kind of handling: "elbow-society".
To change this is of course a really hard way and I thing unfortunately the people within the "civilized society" haven't the ability to scrutinize these things. A easy way to find a resonsibility out of us is always better as a change of own opinions.
In my opinion all these discussions in Germany about gun-control and the prohibition of ego-shooters are a window-dressing only.
Sure do you heard about the gun rampage in Erfurt in 2002 where an ex-pupil shot inside his school 16 people... (horrible analogies)
As a result of this gun rampage the German government tightened the (already rigorous) laws concerning gun possession and established an age rating by buying ego-shooters (18 years). Airy-fairy, if you ask me - who is spending money for a censored ego-shooter if you can download the same (uncensored) from net...
However, the real reasons don't tackled....
And I fear, in this case will be the same procedure as usually: responsible are always the "bad" guns and the "worse" ego-shooters and the "worst" combination of both...
Now everbody can lean back and celebrate themsleves: "Aren't we great, are we?!"
Yes, the results examplify this perfectly...

Sorry, I note I'll cynically a little bit...

Today started the proceeding against Josef Fritzl. Sure do you know that this guy caged his daughter for 24 years into a basement dungeon, violate her several times per week and sired seven children with her during this time.

The following outrages will accused:
1) Murder:
He is suspected in 1996 as biological father put the newborn baby M.F. to death by fail to bring about medical aid, although he knew that the baby was in a life-threatening situation.
>threat of punishment: 10 - 20 years imprisonment or imprisonment for life.
2) Slavery:
He is suspected in the timeframe from Aug-29-1984 to Apr-26-2008 brought his daughter Elisabeth into a slavery akin situation by cage her during this timeframe into a basement dungeon, brought her in completly dependence, called for carnal services and had her at his disposal.
>threat of punishment: 10 - 20 years impriosonment
3) Violation:
He is suspected, forced his daughter to coitus at regular intervals.
>threat of punishment: 5 - 15 years imprisonment
4) Caging:
He is suspected, three of his sired children (with his daughter) caged into a cramped and clammy dungeon in the basement of his house without daylight and without a direct supply of fresh-air.
>threat punishment: 1 - 10 years imprisonment
5) Heavy coericon:
He is suspected, in the timeframe from Aug-29-1984 to Apr-26-2008 by threat of installation of booby-traps and gas-traps bared Elisabeth F. and the three jointly children from attempts to escape.
>threat of punishment: 6 months - 5 years imprisonment
6) Incest:
He is suspected, repeatedly executed coitus with his daughter.
>threat of punishment: until 1 year imprisonment"

Law and justice all due respect - but in my opinion the only way to really punish him is: "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth". All imprisonments around the world can't show him what his victims had to suffer for 24 years.
...and the capital punishment (we haven't here in Austria) would be a too fast and too easy way for him.

I wish I knew the solution. I do know that each time firearms have been outlawed, only the criminals keep their firearms as they are a tool of the trade. Consequently, crime escalates dramatically.

As for the man who caged and raped his daughter, amongst other crimes, some people do not deserve the air they breathe!

Thief swipes 83-year-old woman's 66-year-old bike

A thief in Maine stole a 66-year-old bicycle that belonged to an 83-year-old woman. Ruth Slovenski got the blue Huffy bicycle as a gift when she was a teenager in 1943.

Police said Slovenski had left the bike near a mailbox. When she went back to it two hours later, the bike was gone.

The bicycle has wide fenders and a large metal basket. A nursing home security video shows a man wearing a hat and dark clothing riding off on the bike.

Slovenski said the bike had great sentimental value.

A dastardly deed but hopefully with the video all will turn out well!

A Navy officer who spent his career helping service members deal with stress and a 19year-old soldier from Maryland were among the five people shot to death at a military counseling clinic in Baghdad.

One other officer and two enlisted soldiers also were among the dead, officials said, but their names have not been released.

Machlinski, who spoke to her son on Mother's Day, said he had talked about the alleged shooter, Sgt. John Russell. She said he told her Russell was deeply angry at the military after three tours of duty in Iraq.

Though it is of little consequence now, it would seem to be improper do discuss the man with other non medical professionals. I still can not discuss my service and it wasn't medical. This is just a small part of the problems that have developed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Nearly all who have served in this type of fighting have suffered some degree of stress. When there is an "undefined" enemy and one faces criminal action if they shoot a civilian the stress far exceeds anything experienced in our previous wars. Nearly all who have left the service have reported that treatment for stress in today's military is woefully inadequate.

In no way do I want to minimize this, but if we are going to fight wars of this nature, we have to get our s@@t together and do it right. The old saying, "if you treat a person like a dog long enough, eventually he will react like a dog and bite you" is very true!

Chrysler announced plans to cut 800 of its 3200 dealerships. They are to be named through the bankruptcy court on Thursday. Since there are 5 within 30 miles of me, I am certain some of those will go. Our dealer has had the dealership for over 50 years and the outlet has been here longer than that. They employ at least 20 people.

April foreclosures rose by 32%. More than 342,000 households received a foreclosure notice in April. April was the second consecutive month where more than 300,000 households received a foreclosure notice. The number of borrowers with mortgage troubles has failed to slow in spite of govt. assurances.

I suspect this will continue until we get some jobs back. Also, I see no help for those who are facing foreclosure. We need to contact our legislators and voice our displeasure with the situation. I doubt they can do much but if they hear from enough constituents, they will get nervous about THEIR prospects for continued employment!

A NY man who assisted a woman being robbed was stabbed and collapsed while chasing the perp. Over two dozen people walked past him as he lay bleeding on the sidewalk. One took a cell phone picture and one partially turned him over then rolled him back. After an hour and twenty min. emergency personnel arrived. By that time he had died.

From the video, we know that at least one person had a cell phone. Some stood over him and looked for a min.

What is wrong with the people in that community? Is it a big city thing?
