Ok, I will freely admit that I am no techie, just ask my kids, lol.

I have a problem that I need a hand with conerning my comp and I can't figure it out.

Friday night after my son got off of the computer, it started coming up with the error, *program* is causing an error in WININET.DLL

I put *program* like that cos it's happenin with a lot of them, all the messenger progrms except MSN, and it freezes IE so that I have to hit Ctrl+ alt+delete in order to get it to close. I had to go download Opera in order to even get ON the internet (yes, I know, how could I do that if IE didn't work? hubby got it working long enough to do that)

I was able to go to windows update to try and find the file (someone told me that it had probably been deleted somehow, and that was what was causing the problem), I found it, downloaded it, restarted the comp and I'm still messing up...can anyone tell me what to do without having to take the comp in to a repair shop?
I'm Stressed...can you tell?

Error: "Invalid Page Fault Error in Wininet.dll" on Windows startup
Situation:
After installing Norton AntiVirus (NAV) and then restarting, you see the error message "Invalid Page Fault Error in Wininet.dll."

Solution:
There are two known reasons for this to happen:

Internet Explorer's history or cache folders are corrupted
Internet Explorer's history or cache folders are corrupted, or the index files, which are used to track the contents of the history and cache folders, are damaged.

To solve this problem clear the history and cache folders:
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Internet Options.
Click the Delete Files button.
Click the Clear History button.
Click OK.
Older version of Internet Explorer
If you are using Norton AntiVirus 2001, it has a minimum requirement of Internet Explorer 4.0.1. This error has also been seen when running NAV 2001 with previous version of Internet Explorer, such as version 3.0. If this is your situation, please update your version of Internet Explorer to the current version.

Error: "QDCSFS.EXE caused an invalid page fault in module WININET.DLL" when running Fast & Safe Cleanup
Situation:
When you launch Fast & Safe Cleanup, you see the following error message: "QDCSFS.EXE caused an invalid page fault in module WININET.DLL."

Solution:
You need to replace the Wininet.dll file with a newer version.

To replace the Wininet.dll file:
Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders. The Find: All files dialog box appears.
From the Look In drop-down list, select the drive onto which the operating system is installed.
Check Include subfolders (if not already checked).
In the Named field, type wininet.dll and then click Find Now. Windows displays all files matching the search criteria.
Click the found file, click File, and then click Rename.
Rename the file to wininet.old and press Enter.
Close all open windows.
Shut down and restart the computer.
Reinstall CleanSweep. You should no longer see the error.

In some cases, it may not be possible to rename the file while the computer is running in Windows.

To rename the file in DOS:
Exit all open applications.
Click Start, point to Find, and click Files or Folders. The Find dialog box appears.
From the Look In drop-down list, select the drive where Windows is installed.
Check Include subfolders (if not already checked).
Type wininet.dll in the Named field, and then click Find Now. Windows displays all files matching the search criteria.
Note the path and folder for Wininet.dll (It should be in the C:\Windows\System folder)
Restart the computer.
During restart, hold down the Ctrl key or tap the F8 key until the Windows 98 startup menu appears
Choose Command Prompt Only from the startup menu, and then press Enter.
Type the following commands, pressing Enter after each:

cd windows\system
ren wininet.dll wininet.old
Turn off the computer
Start the computer in Windows.
Reinstall CleanSweep.

This may not be the fix, but I recommend that you do this anyway, because it fixes a lot of problems for people (I work for a computer software company, and a lot of our callers try this and it works great).

Your biggest problem COULD be spyware, adware, and even viruses (virii).

Get Spybot S & D (search and destroy) -
www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Get Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Get AVG Anti-Virus - www.grisoft.com

All of these programs are free and will get rid of (and prevent) spyware, adware, and viruses, all of which could be causing your problems.

Spyware and adware are especially annoying, because they cause conflicts in ways that even their creators don't understand. And if your family members (or you) are visiting websites and downloading software that load these programs, your machine could be riddled with them.

Even if this is not the problem, I still highly recommend that you perform all three of these steps, because they will prevent a lot of future issues as well.

BTW, switching over to Opera or Firefox or Mozilla will also help, because those browsers have plugged a lot of holes that IE leaves open. IE is great for viewing pages with a lot of Java or Flash on them, but otherwise I recommend using one of the other three.

Good luck.

Erik

Bill & Erik,
Thank you for the help, does the fact that I have Windows ME operating system on the computer make any difference to these instructions?

Erik, I have Adaware and AVG already, couldn't do without Adaware, I love it.

I'm going to copy them into a wordpad and try them all, what the heck...it can't hurt now can it?
Oh and I did go get Mozilla and I have to say we like it a LOT better, the window is clean looking and easy to find things on and it imported all our favorites and bookmakrs with one touch of a button. That in itself was impressive.

Thanks guys, I'll let you know how it goes.

I did or tried to do the things you posted..I did add Spybot and ran it, no problems there,

Can't find Command prompt on the darn menu, heck, can't get it to go to the correct menu...or I'm just a dork...DID find MS/DOS promp thingy, but the commands kept coming up invalid....
I'm going to post exactly what I get when I ask for details from one of these things, I copied it the other day...shoulda posted it before!

This was just one of the error logs, it usually doesn't tell me exactly what the problem is other than what I've already posted.

By the way...did I say yet that I HATE windows ME????? I much prefer XP...that's what you get though when you buy a rebuild, I guess
