When in high school, my wife and her cousin wrecked the cousin's brother's car. The cousin's mother then uttered what I've since adopted for almost all situations. "It wouldn't a happened if you'd a kept your ass at home to start with."

My daughter drew me a "cartoon" picture of an elephant spread on the ground with a dozen turkeys standing on its trunk, head and back. The caption was, "DON'T LET THE TURKEYS GET YOU DOWN!" I think that is my favorite saying, though I have several.

Another goes back to President Harry Truman's administration. I remember it as a child as it was the first time I remember adults swearing around me. The saying was "give em hell Harry!" That was probably what started me on the road to the development of a fine vocabulary of curse words.

Dear Lord, lest I continue in my complacent ways, help me to remember that someone died for me today. And if there be war, help me to remember to ask and to answer "am I worth dying for?" - Eleanor Roosevelt

My motto:

If it ain't written down, it doesn't exist. (because of my bad memory and difficulty processing verbal input)

Also:

If it ain't broke, don't fix it--one of my Da's favorites.

Whatever--used when I say something scrambled and can't figure out how to fix it.

Tant pis--French for too bad

Trop tard--French for too late

Oh, weel.

C'est la guerre:

Literally: "It's the war!"

This French phrase of resignation gained widespread use during World War II. It provided the universal excuse for everything that was broken, no longer functioned, was unavailable or could not be accomplished. It also explained away all unusual behavior. That it is in the language of a nation whose life and joie de vivre was being crushed by an occupational army gives it an aroused sensibility.

The phrase lingered into European reconstruction and then into modern times in all nations. It is spoken with a wry acknowledgement of its former literal meaning even though it may currently describe any other interfering force preventing accomplishment of a task, even laziness.

I'm glad to see other potty sayings because the phrase I am known for beyond any other (and also my life's motto) is

"Shite or get off the pot."

Learned it from my grandpa, who was also not a patient man or fond of dramatic deliberations. My husband says that he is going to put it on my gravestone, which I would be half-inclined to believe were we not being cremated.

]AN EXCERPT FROM A POEM THAT I WROTE ON 10/11/07

WE CAN'T CHANGE WHAT WE HAVE DONE....
BUT ONLY TAKE A LESSON FROM EACH EXPERIENCE
AND MAKE THE MOST OF EACH MINUTE THAT WE HAVE LEFT
AND TELL OURELVES THAT IT IS OK TO LIVE, LAUGH AND CRY.....
PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE ALL WORK TOGETHER
TO GIVE US WHAT WE CAN AND SHOULD EXPERIENCE
AND WE NEED TO CHERISH ALL OF THE TIME
THAT WE SPEND WITH OURSELVES AND OTHERS MAKING THE MOST OF THE SPECIAL MEMORIES THAT ARE OURS..
AND THE ONES THAT WE HAVE YET TO CREATE WITH THE PEOPLE THAT WE HAVEN'T MET!!!!![/SIZE]
