Celtic Radio Community > General Discussion > What Have You Bought Yourself Lately?

Posted by: CelticRose 29-Sep-2004, 06:16 PM
I know it is approaching the Christmas season, but come on. While you are buying gifts for family and friends, do you buy gifts for yourself as well and during the year?

I just bought the Highlander TV series on DVD, Season 1-5, I am so jazzed. This guy who sold them to me made me an offer I could not refuse! wow!

Plus I bought the movie, The Alamo, DVD and it arrived as well today. I am really excited.

Then I won a $400 sweepstakes! I was so jazzed, but that means I have to buy one of their items in order to use it...........two of them are lap tops which I really would like to buy, but not sure hubby will go for it. We'll see!

What have you bought for yourself lately?

I think the last thing I bought for myself was a double disc set of chants from around the world

Guilty! Very Guilty after this last weekend! I bouought a celtic rug that comess from the Book of Kell and is made in Irelannd and it appears in the magazine's Scotland and Ireland.
I love it! Should be here by Friday!

I also ordered a new Kilt from one of the networks advertisers, USA Kilts!
Rocky and his wife are the best! Adorable couple!

I'll be ordering the kilt for my new grandson from them too!

I bought myself something really nice this past weekend.

It is a book titled "The Celts" by Frank Delaney. I found it at the Goodwill and it cost me a whole 80 cents. For me, this is an extremely good buy. biggrin.gif

I bought new bedding for me (flanel). Something nice and cozy for the winter to come.

Otherwise you can count on it that I constantly buy books for myself.

One of the last ones was Men in Kilts by Katie MacAlister. Pretty good book.

I plan on buying a few more CD's for my collection.

I went on a bit of a spree at the Ligonier games...

One needlework book with medieval designs complete with documentation.

Eight cross-stitch books of heraldry and a few other themes. Hey, they're out of print and were on sale!

Six more music CDs that I've been dying to get for months. My husband got four, so I don't feel so bad. Actually who am I kidding, I didn't feel bad in the first place! angel_not.gif

A new stoneware mug to replace the one that shattered earlier this season and left me without a period-esque mug for a few events. ::sniff:: I loved my mug! But this one's pretty and holds about a pint. Should be enough to get the proper amount of coffee into my bloodstream in the morning.

I bought myself the latest "Boy Meets Girl" CD. They were a 1 hit wonder in the late 80's with "Waiting for a Star to Fall". They are my all time favourite group, and I was so jazzed to find out that they are recording again!

Posted by: oldraven 29-Sep-2004, 08:29 PM
I bought a big kicker sub box for the Supertruck, and a new windshield banner. night time cityscape with the Superman symbol in the center, (to go along with the big Supe decal on the rear window) That was about a month ago.

Other than that, I'm having the truck restored, and getting the 383 and propane setup installed. (by saying having, I'm highly involved. Worked until 8 last night, and six thirty tonight, after getting home from work. The engine R & R is being done by the shop, and the cab corners and other body welding is being done by the body man. Other than that, I'm all over it. This thing has to get finished before the snow flies so I can park the Turbocoupe)

I bought two books for $1.50 at the book sale the English department was putting on at school. One was a pretty hardcover book of plays by Christopher Marlowe to add to my "I'll probably never read, but look nice on a shelf" collection of books for when I finally move into a place other than the dorms and can create a little library of my own. tongue.gif The other was Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, which I don't know when I'll find the time to read.

I confess that I don't tend to buy for others, but I don't expect others to buy for me either. I've been saving money so I don't have a perticularly long list. I'll include since July so I can include a big dollar item:

2004 Corolla
Secret of Roan Inish
Neuer Duetscher Techno
Lisa Thiel -- Rising of the Phoenix
1/mo subscribtion to A Tale in the Desert (www.atitd.com)
A trip to Pennsic

Think that's it.. Trying to save up for a trip to Ireland in April, and plan on spending a couple days in Ohio at the end of October. Some of my to-buy list is as follows (I won't itemise the CDs)

2 CD's
Knight Rider Season 1 (just added to the list today)
Star Trek Original Series
Star Trek TNG
All the Star Trek Movies I don't already own on DVD (I only have ST4)
Both Short Circuit movies
The NeverEnding Story
Nvidia GeForce FX 6800 512 MB version (may require additional upgrade in PSU and MB)
Sacred Texts CDROM
Pirates! 2004

Fabric for kilts. I'm always buying fabric for kilts. I'm also cheap so I find it on the clearance racks at the fabric store.

Let's see...

Today, I bought myself a cup of coffee (a very good breakfast blend, BTW; it has a hint of French toast in the aroma tongue.gif ), a 20 ounce bottle of Pepsi and a bag of baked Nacho Cheese Doritos drool.gif biggrin.gif ...

BTW, I highly recommend the coffee served at the newer Mobil station convenience stores. I believe most of them are called "On The Run". They have the aforementioned Breakfast Blend and one called Dark Magic that'll really get you buzzing w00t1.gif biggrin.gif .

the last thing I bought for myself besides food was a treadmill. But I am not going to count it cause it didn't work, I had to return it and they didn't have a replacement. So umm....I really haven't bought myself anything in a long time. I wear hand-medowns a lot, or secondhand clothes so I haven't bought any of that. I really just have a enough money to pay bills and buy food. Oh wait! I bought myself a subscription to the Celtic radio founders (or whatever it's called).....

I need to live it a up a little. My goodness.

My daughter went with me to get my hair cut, so while we were out, we decided to make a day of it. Breakfast, the hair salon, shopping (I bought a couple of pair of boots and a few pair of blue jeans) then had a late lunch. All in all, a very satisfactory day! biggrin.gif

We just spent a bundle on having 2 vehicles repaired... tune ups, power steering pumps, cv joints/axles and parts I'd never thought of replaced. sad.gif

So... for myself, I had them charge up my AC too.. It feels much better and the cost was a drop in the bucket compared to that of the other repairs. wink.gif

My sentiments exactly... I had mine worked on and my hubby about had a cow too... then I was driving his... I know he needed to have the brakes checked... I asked him about it and he said well, "See what it needs then call me and let me know, if it's too much, I will fix some of it"... I said, "Okay, why don't you just tell me what parts you want to fix, and I will go from there." He said well, "None really"... biggrin.gif And, there you have it... smile.gif

Yesterday I got something that was completely free: the sound of laughter from children having fun. My niece and nephew were over while their mommy was taking their sister to the pediatrician's office for a checkup. I took Megan and Jay over to the local public school's playground. Jay went on the big kids' swing for the first time and he loved it.

Okay everyone I have a question~ rolleyes.gif An O'ginalli sent me a blank check and wants me to go and buy myself 'something nice' is what they said~ Do you all think there is a proper etiquette for this scenario? That does sound like an interesting decision, and why I wouldn't want someone to hand me a blank check like that. As you mentioned, a new bike or a trip would be out of the question. Too much. Your friend must have a lot of trust in your judgement to have handed you a blank check. At the same time, if they said to get yourself something nice, they're probably not expecting just any $10. I'd figure to look for something that's just at the margin where you'd normally have to worry about if you had enough immediately on hand. That way you should be able to, if nothing else, let them help you. I wouldn't try writing it for more than $100 at the absolute maximum. If what you find costs more than that, pay for the rest yourself and let your friend help out...

Tough call indeed. Trust your gut.

Freekenny-

I would buy something that doesn't cost too much, but you've had your eye on for a while.

And yes, I think a chopper built by Big Paul & the OCC guys would be out of the question biggrin.gif ...

Today, I went downtown to apply for jobs at Carson Pirie Scott and Marshall Field's (two of the big department stores in Chicago-I know they'll be hiring seasonal help soon), so I paid to take a public transit train (one of the stops is basically in Marshall Field's basement) to and from downtown. Also, I had a four cheese individual pizza and a Coke for lunch in Field's basement. They have a food court down there. The prices there are pretty good for downtown.

Maggie that is just so awesome you guys go and cruise around the countryside on that thing. Sounds like a wonderful way to spend a day.

I bought myself at the Georgia State Fair held annually here in Perry, Ga I bought myself and hubby a corndog and coke.

Then I bought a big bag of Kettle corn. When I asked for a big bag the guy handed me what he called a large bag and I just stood there and whinned and told him at the Renisannce Fair their big bag was a really big bag and this was such a small bag. I Did stand there smiling while I whined. He gave me another bag....wasn't that sweet!

Then on the way out I had Apple dumpling and ice cream and a diet coke.

Then when I got home I had 3 Rolaids!

Yummy! Yep I had a great time at the fair tonight. Looked at the hot tubs and was ready to put my undefined down to buy one......I don't think he was too impressed with my idea. I don't understand why not. I already had the guy coming down on the price and then more off if he sold me the floor model.

Gee, no fun!

freekenny, you are more reserved than I am. You are right, though, the gift was a tough one to deal with.

I don't buy things for myself (other than a little beer once a week). My joy is buying nice things for my owner. I deal with gift giving for her by taking her shopping and letting her pick out whatever she wants. On Mother's day, we did shoe shopping. She not only got the joy of the shoes, but the fun of shopping for them as well. biggrin.gif
