Latest booking for Milwaukee's Irish Fest:

The Dave Rowe Trio... http://www.daverowetrio.com/

sniped from their website....

What is the Dave Rowe Trio? It’s a new acoustic group from Maine. It is just a little bit folk, just a little bit bluegrass, just a little bit Celtic, just a little bit traditional, and a whole lot of fun. The band is the continuation of a legacy in Maine music which started with Schooner Fare, the band Dave’s late father, Tom Rowe, founded with brothers Steve and Chuck Romanoff. The legacy continued when Dave and dad formed Rowe by Rowe in 1993 and expanded when they added Denny Breau in 1998 to become Turkey Hollow.

With the passing of his dad in January of 2004, Dave felt a need and responsibility to continue to promote and grow the beautiful musical garden which was left to him. He asked two of Maine’s finest musicians, fiddler Edward Howe and bassist Kevin O’Reilly to join him to become the Dave Rowe Trio. (see website for more info)

I was hoping to have accomplished enough carving this year to apply to the artist's section at the Milwaukee fest. I've come close but not close enough. I'll hopefully have enough done in order to send an application down to Milwaukee for 2007. The problem with working festivals, I've come so close to seeing so many great bands.

Posted by: Senara 05-Apr-2006, 07:33 AM
You'll just have to take the weekend off this year then Keltic and come party with us. That way when you're here in the artist village you won't feel like you're missing out on so much.

Irish Fest 2006 kicks off this Thursday night. w00t1.gif

Okay so I've been a little over anxious about it. Hehe....if anyone is going to be headed to the big party on the lake let me know so I can try to spot you in the masses.

So many bands to see this weekend and not enough time to see them all! I plan on catching Grada, The Elders, Gaelic Storm (obviously), The Irish Rovers, The Fuchsia Band, Enter the Haggis, Mary Jane Lamond, Beolach, and last (but far from least) Rose Laughlin. Of course will probably get to see quite a few others...but that's on my must see list.

So warm up the Guinness Stew cuz I'm ready for a craic!

Just got back after a long six hour drive with the wife and kid from Irishfest. If only the ride back were as much fun as the fest was things would be great. This year festival was great as always. Most of the bands I have already seen. I did, unfortunately, miss the Irish Rovers because the wife dragged me off to see Gaelic Storm (again-but they were worth it). The Elders, Quagmyre, Stone Ring, the Bridies, Trinity and Glencastle Irish dancers were on my list this year and all were very good. I was actually more impressed by Glencastle's dancers this year than Trinity.
Also got to meet Malachy McCourt and got one of his books "A Monk Swimming" signed by him. Charming gentleman and full of great stories. Bought a lot more stuff than I needed-Na, I needed it, really. The amount of goodies is unbelievable.
Biggest surprise for me this year and I'll call this my WOW! award. (last year was the Bridies) was believe or not "Gaelic Storm!" I was expecting it to be the Elders but nope GS wins my WOW vote this year. The reason. Better and tighter musicianship. I've seen GS about 6-7 times and they have always been good, but this year they seem to be much better as a group. The notes were quicker, better accented, faster, and had more of an edge to them. Even Ellery (the fiddler) was having fun-running all over the stage as if she were a member of the bridies herself. This was the GS I was always hoping for- a great band having fun playing great songs. Can't wait for the brodhran player to rejoin and to see what the next album willl be.
This is a great fest that I would encourage anyone to visit-it is the largest Irishfest in the world. Although the road construction around Milwaukee this year could be considered the biggest headache in the world I wouldn't have missed it for anything. Hopefully next year they schedule all the bands that I want to see. There were only four bands this year that were really on my list to see but it was still alot of fun. Oh yes, for God's sake, try the mead.

Sorry to have missed you Roberto...probably passed by you once or twice walking the grounds. Glad you had fun!

Friday: Free admission from 4-5...what a bargain. Got to the grounds and walked right in. Stopped for a dinner of mashed potatos and Guinness Stew at O'Donoghue's before settling in to watch Grada and then the Elders. Grada was amazing and the Elders was absoutely fabulous....after that it was a quick hop over to the standing room only Miller Oasis stage for the Gaelic Storm show. A few new songs of the new Wellies Album were played as well as the usual Pina Colada in a Pint Glass, Swimmin in the Sea, and Johnny Tarr. An absolutely fabulous performance as Roberto already mentioned. So after screaming a few hours it was back to the bus for the ride home.

Saturday: Was a lazy kinda just absorb things kind of day. Stopped and listened to Rose Laughlin and she was gracious enough to sign my CD. She's a marvelous performer and I would highly recommend everyone give her a listen at least once.
The rest of the evening was spent wandering around and checking out the vendors, watching the currach races, the tug pulls, the canines, and planning the spending spree for Sunday. Towards the end of the night we wandered over to the Celtic Roots Stage and took in the last few songs of Beolach and the first half of the Nova Scotia Kitchen Party. A few technical glitches and me feeling a bit tired had us leaving a bit early Saturday night.

Sunday: Spent most of the early afternoon in the Cultural Village, did some browsing of the Literary Corner and picked up a few books. The one that I started reading yesterday is called "Finding My Irish" by Sharon Shea Bossard and she tells of her geneological seach being of a family of Irish hertiage that just never talked about life in Ireland when she was a child. Very good book... Went from there to the Walton's Music tent and took in a Bohdran lesson. I'm thinking next year to get one and just tinker with it and see how proficient I can become. Anyway...stopped over at the Villiage Pub tent and sat down with a drink and watched The Fuchia Band. These guys from Cork throw a hell of a craic and everyone has a great time. For their encore they pulled a few of the other artists (like Patrick Murphy of Gaelic Storm and some of the members of Frogwater) and did a mini-jam session. From there it was time to grab dinner and find our spots for the Scattering...but first was a great group from Quebec called Le Vent Du Nord. Granted most of their stuff was in French but it was a good beat and you could dance a hell of a jig. Was my first opportunity to also see a Hurdy Gurdy being played...very unique instrument.

The Scattering: another wonderful performance to close the festival. Tommy Makem, Liam Spain, Buddy MacDonald, Tom Sweeney, Finbar MacCarthy, The Irish Rovers, Gaelic Storm, The Fuchia Band, Grada, Mary Jane Lamond, the dancers, and anyone that could possibly have been squeezed on stage and wanted to take part was there. A roving good time and another spectacular end to the weekend. I only wished I had thought to take today off of work to sleep it all off. Granted there's so much more that happened this weekend...but this is only a summary. Want to know more you're just gonna have to come experience it next year. Mark your calendars now. August 16-19th, 2007 for next year's Irish Fest.

Do you have any idea were they had the Hurling match. I was hopong to see it but they had the tug of war going on in the sporting area whne the game was scheduled. I forgot to mention that I attended Sister Bernie's Bingo Bash for the second time. Laughed me arse off again though I didn't win. Also got in on the "Who's Your Paddy" tent. Wife won a free CD (not irish music-it would have been nice) but it did get us two free beers each. Helped one of the vendors since all his help disappeared for the weekend and got a free sporran belt for my efforts which was really nice of him. And since it was the same vendor who supplies the National Italian Tartan I thought that I would ORDER MY NEW KILT!!!!!

Yes, its on its way. Been saving up for 5 years for it and everytime I got the money something would happen and I would have to start over. But its been ordered and it's too late now. Eight to ten weeks and it will be all mine. biggrin.gif

So, who are you hoping they will get next year? Or I should say what would you dream lineup be?

QUOTE (Roberto Phoenix @ 21-Aug-2006, 10:38 PM)
So, who are you hoping they will get next year? Or I should say what would you dream lineup be?

I think the Hurling Demo was after the tug pulls saturday night...had a little demo on sunday afternoon as well I believe. I don't have my program with me at work today.

My dream lineup.....man that's a tough one...I've seen soooooooooo many amazing performances over the years, but I'll give it a go.

in no particular order....
Gaelic Storm
Danu
The Elders
The Fuchsia Band
Tommy Makem
Cherish the Ladies
Paddy O'Rilley
Grada
The Irish Rovers
Daryl Simpson (classical tenor v.v. good but hard to find)
Off Kilter
Mary Jane Lamond
Beolach
The Cottars
Bounding Main

those that I have yet to see but think should be there...
Karen Mal
Barleyjuice
Orla Fallon
Lisa Kelly

for starters anyway..... who would you add?

Posted by: Roberto Phoenix 23-Aug-2006, 08:38 PM
Ceili Rain, Battlefield Band, Gael Force, Dropkick Murphey's, Flogging Molly, Dust Rhinos, Leperkaunz, Barleyjuice, Irish Rovers (cuz I missed them this time), and of course Enya (like that is going to happen), Clanned, or Marie Brennen and Tartanic.
I would like to see Afrocelt come back along with Black 47, Clumsy Lovers, and just for fun Slade. Blackmore's Night would be cool even though they are not really celtic. And hey, why not a Bay City Rollers Concert?

Roberto- get that kilt yet???

Posted by: Roberto Phoenix 26-Feb-2007, 09:55 PM
No, not yet. Still owe $300 on it and everytime I get the money together something else comes up. I will have it before spring even if I have to start selling my toy collection.

It seems the entertainemnt schedule is filled. Nothing yet on authors or guest speakers at the hedge school or cultural village. Check the site to see if any of your favorite bands are playing. No must see bands me but that means I get to spend more time doing the cultural stuff.

The authors and guest speakers section is filled up in the Cultural section. Must see for me is Edward Rutherford. I'll post any updates

Posted by: Senara 10-Aug-2007, 09:40 AM
It's a week to IRISHFEST!!!!!!!!!! www.irishfest.com

Sadly, Tommy Makem will not be joining us this year as he as decided to join the heavenly choirs instead on August 1, 2007. This year's scattering will not be the same without him I'm afraid. Going to be several tears shed amongst all the merriment.

Will have to raise a pint or two for his memory...

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 10-Aug-2007, 10:34 PM
I'm hoping they do something special for himother than the "Remembering" part of the show. And I hope that whatever thety do I don't miss it. Can you imagine all the bagpipers gathered there playing Amazing Grace at the same time?

Posted by: Senara 11-Aug-2007, 06:24 AM
I'm sure the Scattering on Sunday night is going to be a big event this year. Afterall it was his stage. I'm thinking it will be a rather quiet walk through the grounds afterwards. Of course all the bands will have their own words for him and probably a song or two of his in their shows. It's just not going to be the same without him.

So what day are you gonna be on the grounds? I'll be there everyday....of course.

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 11-Aug-2007, 09:00 AM
Fri we head down after I get my paycheck. All day Sat and Sunday is usually a toss up between Irishfest and Bristol Ren faire

Posted by: Senara 13-Aug-2007, 10:08 AM
Hope to run into you on the grounds then. Have a safe trip down!

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 15-Aug-2007, 09:47 PM
Heading down tomorrow. Got your Pm and if I get a chance we can meet on Sat. I can't promise anything but Ill try to give you a buzz. I've got the wife, youngest son, and the daughter with baby in tow. Six hour ride filled with kicking, screaming and crying. At least the baby will behave. rolleyes.gif If by chance, on Sat, you see a rather tall gentleman wearing a McDonald Sport kilt and a black "Got Kilt" shirt with the back saying "Beware of Strong Breezes" that would be me. Have fun! Hope to see you there.

Posted by: Senara 20-Aug-2007, 12:16 PM
I'm finally dried after this weekend! Will give you all the whole rundown once I can get out of work and have a chance to collect my thoughts and photos.

Quick Highlights
Friday: great weather-Gaelic Storm, Fuchsia Band, The Elders
Saturday: pouring rain, drowned rat & shivering-Rose Laughlin, Mairtin De Cogain storytelling, Cherish the Ladies. Photos w/ Rose and Mairtin (woohoo)
Sunday: showers off and on-shopping, Leahy, Beoga, Scattering

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 21-Aug-2007, 08:44 PM
Hi Senera! I see you got caught in the downpour too. Friday was nice and I managed to pick up some of the stuff I didn't get last year. Got "Princes of Ireland" signed by Ed Rutherford and my Irishfest soccer shirt I've been waiting for all year. We watched Gaelic Storm and the Tommy Makem tribute and then wewondered around making a mental shopping list for next year. Sat, as you said, was wet, very wet. If that is what they call a soft day in Ireland I'll wait till gobal warming set in. I spent most of the day hopping from merchant stall to merchant stall. I did watch Liz Carroll and Enter the Haggis over on the Celtic Rock stage and picked up ETH's live CD before calling it quits. I planned on giving you a call but my wife and daughter chose to go mall shopping that day and they had your number in the checkbook. As it was I was completely soaked through-kilt and all by the time I left.
We skipped Bristol Ren faire for now and headed back Sunday. I now have a nice little cough and cold but it was worth it. Hopefully we can get together next year or maybe at the Waukasha Highland Games if I can get down there on Labor Day.

So how do you like Gaelic Storm's new fiddle player?

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 16-Dec-2007, 05:45 PM
The entertainment schedule is currently up for 2008. Here is who is coming so far:

Gaelic Storm
The Barra MacNeils
The Celtic Tenors
Eileen Ivers & Immigrant Soul
Solas
Makem & Spain Brothers
Seven Nations
Seamus Kennedy
Scythian
The Fuschia Band
Tom Sweeney
The Kilfenora Ceili Band
The Omagh Choir
Peatbog Faeries - Scottish Celtic-Rock-Fusion-Dance Band
Monto - a great new ballad band
from Ireland
Screaming Orphans - dynamic all-girl rock/pop group from Donegal

I'm already a definite yes for Solas, Peatbog Faries and Eileen Ivers. I missed Eileen last time she was there and Solos and Peatbog have been on my "to See" list for awile. Scythian too. I checked out the Screaming Orphans-being more of a traditonalist I think I will pass-bit too modern for me but I've been surprised before. Now, were is Barleyjuice and the Elders?

Posted by: Senara 12-Jan-2008, 05:08 PM
The Elders probably won't confirm until February or March I'm thinking...at least it will be after their trip to Ireland with Enter the Haggis...who will probably confirm at the same time.

Awesome the Omagh choir is returning. Definately a fantastic group! One of the Celtic Tenors was their director the last time they were here. Wonder if Dierdre will be with the Celtic Tenors this year...that would be awesome!

As usual...so many great bands...not enough time to see them all!

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 14-Jan-2008, 12:28 AM
The Elders have the St Paul Irish fest the week before and one in Colorado the weekend after Milwaukee so at least that slot is still open. ETH has only one date scheduled in August and that is at the end of the month. It looks like it may be a go for both bands being there.

I'll have to check out the Omagh choir. Sounds like they are something to see.
I still would like to see Afrocelt again but I guess they are looking for a label right now. So far it does look to be a better lineup than last years. Still hoping for Barleyjuice or Ceili Rain.

If you can make the trip and if the Elders are not at Milwaukee this year, they will be one of the headliners this year at St. Paul's Irish fest the weekend before Milwaukee along with Flogging Molly, the Tanahill Weavers, and a few others. Best of all its free admission.

Ok, I got my computer back from the shop and I can finally post about this years festival or at least what I sa of it when I wasn't chasing down the granddaughter. Six hours down and back with the munchkin was no picnic either. But at least the van didn't break down again untill today.
Anyway we only went for one day ( Bristol ren Faire on Sunday)but it was still very much worth it. With the grandaughter I only caught bits and pieces of some the acts that I wanted to see-Peatbog Faeries, Eileen Ivers, Gaelic Storm, and Seamus Kennedy, Saw Doctors. All were great.
I also happened to be wearing my Celtic radio tee and when we sat down the lady across from us at the picnic table turned out to be Fiona Molly. She asked about the site and the guy with her suggested exchanging a CD for a Celtic radio business card but I politely declined (since I didn't have any cards) and and I gave her the website info so there might be a few CDs heading to this site.
Best band for this year- Mind you I only heard bits and peices of everybody but the ones that impressed me the most in that few minutes was the Furry Village so check out their website and see what you think.

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 22-Aug-2008, 04:52 PM
I was hoping to have a website for Furrry Village but this is all that there is at the moment.
http://www.gerardfahy.nl/
This is Gerald Fahy's website and the info is from the Irish fest Entertainment schedule which has a bit of a sound sample and this info
FURRY VILLAGE
Gerald Fahy: Uilleann Pipes
Chris Kelly: Acoustic guitar
Yvonne Fahy: Accordion, percussion
John Colohand: Lead guitar
Mairin Fahy: Fiddle
Benny Hayes: Keyboards
Terry Fahy: Drums
John Lyons: Bass
Lead by Gerald Fahy of Ballinakill, Co. Galway, Furry Village was formed in 1994 and continues to be one of the most dynamic bands in Ireland today. The band offers an eclectic mix of Irish traditional melodies and Eastern influences with pulsating percussion. A master on the Uilleann pipes, Fahy's music has been covered by world orchestras and featured in Micheal Flatley's Feet of Flames tour. This is a show of humor, dance and singing that will be fun for the entire family.

Well another Irishfest come and gone. IMy wife , son and grandaughter all attended this year. Busy weekend in Milwaukee. They had two Brewers games, the Satte fair, and Irishfestr all on the same weekend! needless to say that it was a good year and the weather held up nicely. We got to see the red Hot Chili Pipers on Friday night and Saturdya we just wondered around taking in all the sights. I was hoping to do some more shoping but it was impossible with the 1 1/2 year old. Picked up Galway bay by Mary Pat Kelly and talked with her for a little while over our perspective Kelly ancestors. I finall got a chance to try some Irn Bru frim Scotland. Good stuff but its hard to describe the taste. It certainly quenches the thirst unlike American pop wuich makes you thirsty for more. Alos picked up some three dachunds ale for the wife. The only problem I had was that the fest CD vendors had no Albannach CDs and the Barleyjuice one I wanted was all sold out. I did manages to meet the RHCP and get their CD signed by all the band members.
Sun was Bristol Ren faire which was fun but agin I wish I had more alone time. Nest year is the 30th anniversary for Irishfest so the lineup should be good.

Irishfest website has begun to update for their 30th anninversare. The theme is "Reunions" The entertainment lineup will start to be unveiled December 11th for the 12 days of Christmas. Northern Ireland will be showcased this year.

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 09-May-2010, 06:59 PM
It looks like the entertainment list is pretty much set for this year. There are also a few of the cultural events listed such as the authors who will be appearing. This is the 30th Anniversary and Reunions is the theme for this year. The Cultural Exhibits Tent will concentrate on Northern Ireland. One of the central exhibits will be on Narnia, from the C.S .Lewis series of books, which was based on many spots in County Down. I was there for the 25trh anninversay and the the anniversary T-Shirts went really fast! So if you want one you may want to order it on the website or pick one up as soon as you get there.
Red Hot Chili Pipers, Young Dubliners, Scythian, Liz Carroll, and Gaelic Strom are amoung the entertainers this year. Check the website for the rest.

Five more days and I'm heading down to Milwaukee. Got my new kilt, my 30th anniversay shirt, and I am way past ready to go!!

Posted by: englishmix 13-Aug-2010, 09:12 PM
That really sounds like a festival well worth the long drive from Kentucky!

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 04-Sep-2010, 09:52 PM
Ok so this is a couple weeks late but this is what you missed by not attending this year. I attended Thrusday-Saturday and despite having to travel down in a van I really didn't think would make it and a 5 month old grandson would could draw away attention from any kilt with just a giggle I had a pretty good time. I only saw one concert in full since I didn't want the munkin's hearing wrecked so early in life and that was the Red Hot Chili Pipers. They were awesome as usual but their T-shirts got lost somewere between Milwaukee and Scotland so I wasn't able to get one. Friday was the most memorable. What started off as a light drizzle turned into a half hour monsoon. Ankle deep water-everything shut down and me drenched to the core trying to hold a merchant's tent flap down with one hand and a baked potato with the other. Saturday the usual hot but I was kilted so I didn't have any worry's
The wife once again draged me off to "Sister Bernie Bingo Bash" again We have onlyseen the play about three times but she likes it and its funny every time. This time she actually won the change jar at the end. Merchants were all over. There was artwork by several artists displayed there whom I wish to highlight. Please check out their sites. The work is remarkable.
Jan Delyth. Her calenders are available at Barnes & Noble
http://www.kelticdesigns.com/

Cynthia R. Matyi -Her website is unavailable right now but perhapes later you can try to get there from Jan Delyth links page

Steve O"Laughlin- Does public art with a celtic theme in LA
http://www.stevenoloughlin.com/

There were others there, most of whom can be reached through Jan's links page but my all time favorite is still Rachael Arbuckle. http://www.rachel.arbuckle.com/ who does the artwork for Tailten Games.
There was also the Northern Ireland showcase in the Cultural Village with a Titanic exhipit which had several things from the ship. My favortie was the Titanic shirt that said "It was fine when it left Belfast!" My only disappointment was that the linup of bands was pretty much the same this year as it was for last year. Hopefullly next year will be a newer linup and I'll have no children in tow. I don't mind the munchkins but the merchant tents are impossible to get through with a stroller. I may post some more memmories later but my workplace is keeping me very busy so I don't get on the internet as often.

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 04-Sep-2010, 10:04 PM
One more thing I would add is that there was a Celtic Rock CD which is now being offered through the Irishfest website store. I would highly recommend it. It is worth the 15 bucks.

Decribed at Irishfest.com as five unbelievably talented young musicians from the University of Limerick…Goitse!…(pronounced gwi-cha for the uninformed) Wow...these kids (young adults as they tell us) can play and have fun! This is a don't miss band!

A new bunch of Scottish rocks by the name of Skerryvore. I listed to a couple tracks off there website and this band is going to have the crowd jumping. There are three songs . The Ginger Grouse jigs is pretty traditional sounding. On the Road is very modern. Singer reminded me of Seven Nations when I first heard it. The Rox Revival song is the one that gets you going. A fast paced bagpipe with a touch of ska thrown in by the horn section.
Check it out for yourselves!

On the 150th day of Christmas Paddy McFest gave to me: 150??? Well in truth it is the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. So this year in commemoration of that event the Ward Irish Music Archives will be presenting an exhibit on the Irish and their involvement in the war. We'll also be bringing back Civil War historian and singer David Kincaid. David delighted Milwaukee audiences a few years back and we're delighted to have him back!

Clumsy Lovers will be back after an absence of several years. They were one of the bands I saw at my first visit to irishfest. Their music is a combination of bluegrass, irish, and a bit of country. It is pretty hard to define their sound but the tunes are very enjoyable. The website is here:

http://clumsylovers.com/

You can here quite a few of their tunes and see their video if you click on the download section of their website. Bobby Banjo, Okay Alright, Smart Kid, and This is Clumsy Love ar my favorrites. Also check out their "ow-sorry" t shirt. Funny stuff

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 08-Feb-2011, 04:53 PM
Some new names to add to the list. This is the kind of lineup I expected for the 30th anninversary last year but I'll take it anyway. Lots of new talent. We have Vishten, the Twin Citiies Ceili Band, Capitol Ceili Band, Two Tap Trio, the Hibs, Different drums of Ireland, the Henry Girls, Qristina and Quinn Bachand, the Outside Track, Fiach, and Moya Brennan. Links to each are on the irishfest Website.

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 28-Mar-2011, 08:36 PM
Altan has been added. Not much else new on the website. I'm also looking at the German and Italian festivals too but no news yet on this years festivities.

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 05-May-2011, 07:53 PM
Nothing really new with Milwaukee's Irish fest. I've been keeping an eye on the other festivals in Wisconsin and the surrounding area but they usually just have someone who iis already playing Milwaulkee. iItalain fest looks really good this yerar. So far its Frankie Valli, the Monkees, Nick Stellino, and Cake Boss. Oh did I mention that this year is Italy's 150th birthday!! I was hoping to go this year but the wife will probably have to work and its a week after the daughter wedding so cash flow will not be big that weekend.. I was a bit dissapointed that you have to buy tickets for each individual show. At irish fest all the acts are free with the price of admission and you can just walk around and take it all in.

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 01-Jun-2011, 10:00 PM
The full schedule for the entertainers is up but you have to go to the entertainment page and click on the "Brochure" link for now. No word yet on any of the guests for the cultural village.

Donegal and Derry are the featured counties this year. From the website:

These two special counties will be represented at several of the must-see venues at Irish Fest this year, including the Moore Street Market, the Cultural Pavilion, Hedge School, and numerous musical stages, including the Lakefront Brewery Celtic Roots Stage, the main showcase stage for Derry and Donegal artists.

In addition, look for these Derry and Donegal attractions:
•Author of “The Scribe: The Life and Works of James O’Neill,” Caoimhin Mac Aoidh, will be signing copies of his book in the Literary Corner
•Special exhibit on Beech Hill House and its connection in helping soldiers during WWII in the Cultural Pavilion
•Ceramics, jewelry, and textiles featuring famous area weavers, artists, and craftsmen will be available for purchase in the Moore Street Market
•Exhibit on weaving by Studio Donegal in the Cultural Pavilion
•Discussion on Derry being selected as the UK City of Culture 2013 in the Hedge School
•Award-winning films, “Paradiso,” “Shine of Rainbows” and “Dance Lexi Dance,” will be shown in the Volta Theatre
•Irish language experts from Glencolumcile and An Culturlann, Geneologist Brian Mitchell and emigration historian Paddy Fitzgerald will be in the Cultural Village
•Stories of U.S. Presidential links to Ulster-Scots will unfold in the Hedge School

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 05-Aug-2011, 09:05 PM
it seems the website has been updated to its fullest. The only listings I haven't seen are for the cultural villege which tells what authors, plays, presentations, etc are going to be there. I'm keeping an eye out for it as it is one of my favorite places to stop at. I meet the most interesting people when i'm in that area. Some of the theater plays are listed in the schedule section and if you look you can find a few presentations.

Another year done and another year of fun! Well almost. We had to skip Bristol ren faire this year due to lack of funds, our renter being behind on rent, and my layoff from work. Sucks, but there is always next year. My wife sid manage to get a book signed by Patrick taylor who writes all those irish doctor/country girl/christmas books you see at Walmart.
Had a chance to see all the acts I wanted to see this year except for Moya Brennan. Hopefully she will be there again. Maybe next year she will bring her sister Enya. Yeah, I wish.

Lots of videos up on youtube. Maybe some can go on Video Celt. could start a festivals section.

2012 lineup is starting to be announced using the 12 days of Christmas theme they went with last year. So far they have Del McCory, the Henry Girls, and Gaelic Storm. Check the website daily for other bands heading to the festival next year.

Most of the Entertainment list is done. No Red Hot Chili Pipers this year but they were just at Milwaukees Summerfest a couple weeks ago. Enter the Haggis, High Kings, and Scythian are all on my to see list.
Nothing under teh Cultural area yet as far as authors or other famous Irish celebs showing up yet. The wife will probably drag me off to Mother Bernie's Bingo Bash again since we won the pot two years ago!

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 31-Jul-2012, 06:48 PM
Some of th authors that will apper are now showing up on the website. What! No E. L. James? rolleyes.gif Mostly local authors from the looks of it and none that I've heard of. Economy must still be putting a bit of a pinch on the budget.

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 16-Dec-2012, 09:07 PM
2013 artists are now starting to be listed using the same 12 days of Christmas format they have used in the past. So far its the Elders, Gaelic Storm, Screaming Orphans, Goitse, and folk singer Bill Paxton.

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 26-Dec-2012, 10:35 PM
Full list for the 12 days of Christmas announcements are up, Red Hot Chili Pipers will be back again this year and the highlighted Celtic land will once again be Nova Scotia so expect to see a lot of artists back once again from that area.

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 11-Jul-2013, 09:36 PM
Looks like most of the bands are up for this year and the stuff for the cultural area is starting to take shape with an Irish writers of science fiction and fantasy exhibit this year. Still waiting to see what authors they are going to get for the literary corner. Must see bands will again be the Red Hot Chili Pipers, the Elders, the Screaming Orphans and Gaelic Storm. Most of the others are new to me so it should be an interesting year. Hopefully no disasters will take place this year that will keep us at home like last year.

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 11-Aug-2013, 09:05 AM
Four more days!!! It's looks like everythings up on the website for 2013. Both Gaelic Storm and the Red Hot Chili Pipers have new CD's for this year so it should be interesting. There will be a display of Irish contributions to Science Fiction and Fantasy along with a Tolkien display in the cultural area. Another display dedicated to the Wee folk of the British isles. I hope they bring up the pixies of Cornwall were some of my family hail from. I haven't heard of any of the authors that are featured-most seem local. The theatre has a couple of the plays that I would like to see this year. "The Little People" looks like a good one and "Sister Bernie's Bingo Bash" is a yearly one for us. (we won the cash pot two years ago!) Hope to see some of you there!!

See you there (in the general sense I suppose) - I'll be playing with Atlantic Wave on Friday at 4 on the Aer Lingus stage, then wandering about the grounds and hanging out at Celtic Roots a lot. I'll be there every day Thursday thru Sunday. Weather forecast is looking good....

Hey Robert, give us a report on how it all went. Have never been to the Milwaukee event and would love to someday.

Tell us about it!

Sadly, i was unable to attend this year. My daughter showed up wednesday evening to inform us that her power had been shut off so we had to pay the past due amount which was about a grand. So all our plans went out the window. My poor wife was crying for most of the weekend. Normally my daughter would have been able to get help from the state for that sort of thing but the electric company she has to go with is a co-op and doesn't take state funds.
I did see some good posts on facebook and the videos ares tarting to roll n on yutube now. I guess the Red Hot Chili Pipers had a crowd of 12,000 and they had to start turning people away from that section. I wish some of the lecture and presentations would have been filmed for those who can't make it. So here's llooking forward to next year. Right now we are trying to get to the MN ren fest for the Highland fling weekend.

A bit late in the announcements this year but so was the festival. Normally they start announcing the lineup up in Dec but nothing showed untill a couple of weeks ago. Okay, so far this year the lineup this year is the High Kings, Dougie MacLean (wrote Caledonia song), Carlos Nunez, Beoga, StepCrew, Willis Clan, Shannon Shannon, We banjo 3, Manran, Seamus Kennedy, and Scythian. So far it looks like I will be able to make it this year since both my house and car will be paid off soon! In other news I've heard that Clannad is getting back together so it will be cool if they came. Still no Barleyjuice, Albannach, or any of the big name festival regulars ahve been announced.

Posted by: Robert Phoenix 23-Feb-2014, 08:39 PM
Some new artists have been added with Gaelic Storm and the Red Hot Chili Pipers being amoug them. This will be one of the stops for Black 47's final tour and a final show for Different Drums of Ireland. Both great bands worthy of seeing in a lifetime. Check out the lineup here

Pretty much a a cut and paste of what I posted over at the Brotherhood of the Kilt forum. Still not recoved enough from everything to write up two seperate reviews but here it is:

Ok, I made it down there finally and here's my review for the yrear. First the good:

Red Hot Chili Pipers were awesome!!! I've seen many rock acts, Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Rush, Stones, Grateful Dead, and I've have rarely seen an opening number that was so impressive and well done as the RHCP. And the rest of the show was just as great. I was so impressessed I saw them twice-full show. Hoping I can spot myself in the crowd when the DVD of the concert comes out. Grey shirt with "Yooper" written across it. Middle-fifth row(?) purple kilt. The rest of the festival seems like a blur after that show. Got a shirt for being at the filming of the DVD which should be out in October. Black 47 and Different Drums both put out great final Irishfest shows. Skerryvore also put on a pretty good show.We Banjo Three and Socks in the Frying Pan seem to be the "hot" new bands that were being buzzed about during the festival.

The bad: Missed Dougie MacLean. They scheduled him on the opposite side of the park at the same time as Black 47 and RHCP. Hopefully he will be back. The Cultural center was totally rearranged and that will take some getting used too. No Sister Bernie's Bingo Bash which was always fun. The UK snack area was completely taken over by jameson wine tasting this year so no jelly babies for me. And the scariest thing for me was the almost total lack of CD's available. The bands had their CD's for sale but there use to be two vendors that sold CDs of other artists. It was my celtic music supply house that I got to go to once a year. One of vendors disappeared three years ago. The other use to have four tables of Cds. This year he had one table and they were priced at either $5 or $9 bucks each. Snapped up what I could but it looks like CD's are on their way out. FYI, I just bought a brand new 2014 Kia Soul-great car, comes with Sirrus radio (which I hate) and no CD player which, I guess will not be available in any of their future cars. Now I've got to buy an MP3 player and download everything onto that to listen to it in the car. Sucks, period.

Last night of the festival for us we were on the way out and out of nowhere i got kilt checked. Nuff said. Sunday we went to Bristol ren fair. Think we will skip that next year and just stay for all three or four days of the fest. My wife Sarah has all the pics on her facebook site.
