Background: Richardson is a sept of the name of Buchanan. There is no current Chief of Clan Richardson. The name Buchanan is is derived from their territory in Stirlingshire, bordering Loch Lomond. These lands were originally known by the Gaelic name "Buth Chanain", meaning "Canon's House", from where the name "Buchanan" arose. The first record of the name appears in 1224 when Dominus Absolone de Buchkan witnessed a legal charter by Malcolm, Earl of Lennox. King David II officially recognised the family of Buchquhanane in the 14th century and the clan prospered with a number of cadet branches.
