A Celtic festival of music and games is hardly the sort of thing you’d expect to find in the mountains of central Italy. But the Montelago Celtic festival, now in its eleventh year, regularly attracts some 15,000 enthusiastic Italians and Europeans for a totally unique weekend experience. Scheduled for 2nd-3rd August, 2013, this year's lineup has an Eastern European flavour with groups from Poland and Latvia joining others from Scotland, Austria, and naturally the best of Italy's Celtic bands. Previous editions have featured Celtic heavyweights such as the Peatbog Faeries from the Isle of Skye, Hevia from Spain, Ireland’s Kila, Mark Saul from Australia, and Galicia’s Berrogüetto, and The City of Rome Pipe Band, which was founded in 2000 and has its own officially registered "City of Rome" tartan.

The mainly under-30 crowd, who camp in a reserved area for the two-night event, are boisterous but amicable as they heave to the music, toss the caber, enjoy the reenactment of a Celtic battle, and wander the more than 50 Celtic stalls (amongst which is a stand dedicated to Tolkein). Set in a spectacular mountain plain surrounded by the peaks of the central Apennines, it’s a happening festival of rare camaraderie – there hasn’t been a single negative incident since it started in 2003 – offering something very different for the young European music and nature lover. Within striking distance are as many travel gems as you’d like, from the outdoor (the Grand Circuit of the mythical Sibillini Mountains) and the celebrated (Assisi), to the “indoor” (Frassasi Caves) and the unheralded (the art and architecture of almost any village/town you happen into).

The festival takes place on the mountain plain of Colfiorito in the Le Marche municipality of Serravalle del Chienti, which is readily accessible from a number of metropolitan areas, including three airports within striking distance– Perugia, Ancona, and Pescara.
