I have a real problem with people giving a song a bad (less than 3 stars) rating, when there is nothing "wrong" with the song. A bad rating is justified if the song is poorly recorded, the instruments are badly played, the singer is off-key, etc., but if it's just not "your type of music" and you just don't like it, please don't rate it!

In other words, don't give it a bad rating based solely on personal taste. It takes a very long time for a song's rating to bounce back from a low score. (Case in point is Charlie Zahm's perfect--pitch, execution, etc.--rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Someone gave it one-star once upon a time and despite my giving it 5 stars dozens of times, it still has only a 2-star rating. It happens to be the best version of the song I have ever heard--sung the way the song was written!)

If you really feel led and justified to give a bad rating, then please leave a quick review stating why. At least that will give others an idea if the song might still be something they would like or not and not just doom the song to sit ignored.

I agree, we have noticed that certains songs consistently we get a thumbs down when in fact it is a great song. The problem with overcoming such a rating is that you can only rate the song when it is playing and the more ratings that are made, the harder it is to raise the value of the rating.

When rating a song, be sure to judge it not on the appropriateness of the song on Highlander Radio, but on the musical qualities and abilities.

Much appreciated!

I'm glad to hear you say that, Vixie. That's how I rank songs, trying to focus on quality, etc. and not whether or not it's a style I like. The songs I don't like, but are reasonably well done, I just don't rank them. But...if it makes me want to turn the station off....2 stars. smile.gif

Appreciate this thread! I am also surprised by the songs that are rated poorly. Truth is, Paul does a great job making sure we have high quality music on the channels.

For me, I am not a fan at all of Celtic Rock. Having said that, it would be silly for me to rate every song in that genre poorly simply because it doesn't "ring my bell." I love Trad, but I know not everyone else does. I'd hate to see everyone that dislikes Trad rate all the songs poorly simply because of taste.

I agree, DiMaSt, that songs that I don't like I just don't rate.

Good stuff, Folks! Have a great day!

And the way things work, the higher you rate a song and add it to your favorite list the more likely that song will be played in the futuring because its rating will increase.

Yes, the Celtic Rock songs can be a bit overwhelming sometime if you are listenng to Danny Boy and then comes on some Flogging Molly.

I guess Highlander Radio is a showcase for all different types of Celtic Music so you get a flavor of each. Then the other channels like "Best of Highlander Radio" would play a more refined selection and then of course a channel like "Celt-Rock-Radio" would play more rock selections.

Guess its all in the mood you are in! smile.gif

And that is precisely why I personally love Highlander so much. Rarely does a song come on that I say "eh, that's not so great". And there is only one song that I actually say "yuck!" to, and for some reason, that particular song is requested by someone often...go figure! (And, of course, I simply don't rate it--no hypocrisy here wink.gif )

If variety is the spice of life, than Highlander is one hot tamale! cool.gif

Doesn't not-rating a song because you don't like it, versus rating it with a low number of stars, sort of defeat the purpose of a rating system? It seems like it should be honest in both directions. It's not that I go out of my way to low-rate songs I don't like... but if there is one, I try to be honest in how I rate it. And the same goes for songs I really like and want to hear more of. With a station that is as user-supported and user-driven as Celtic Radio is (which I love), both messages "I love this song, please play it all the time" and "If I hear this song one more time, I am going to take a hammer to my speakers" seem like they'd be equally important. Aren't they?

But that's what I like about this place!! Most radio stations are genre based, rock or pop or folk or classical, etc. But not here, oh no. This is where Flogging Molly, a band I really like, follows Paul Bryom, a classical tenor that I really like, and then the Chieftans. thumbs_up.gif

Wow...I love everyone's input; tis bring a smile to me face.

Hi Paul...how are you. long time no talk to; wanted to thank Paul so very much for helping me out when I first found this outstanding forum/online radio station after seeing Celtic Thunder in California on their first tour to the US; I simply google'd them trying to find out more information...and ended up here and boy has it been a wild ride since.

Paul pretty much knows who I started promoting which led to another, then another, then another...etc etc etc...then a title "Artist Relations Director" for The Celtic Crier. I have had many of the groups I've met send their CD's here and a ton of new members followed...I am so very happy to hear of the huge increase of members and see people talking about the Celtic Radio CD Contest, the Awards and other things on facebook.

Celtic Radio is awesome; I didn't realize is there are so many genre's in Celtic Music and as you see on Celtic Radio; I love the variety and have gotten to know some of the groups personally. Some of it isn't my thing, or I thought it wasn't, until I possibly have the opportunity to hear them live at the festival, venue or event; so I tend not to judge, but listen, the majority of groups are incredibly talented.

I've heard Paul continuously back up some groups that people are critical of simply because they think its not a good fit for this station; its simple, don't listen or switch over to one of the other Celtic Radio stations; everyone has a right to be heard and a right to voice their opinion.

What is being said about the rating is so correct; simple, if you don't like the music or it isn't your thing...don't rate it.

Probably went way off topic, have a awesome evening...and remember to Always Reach for Happy and Never give up on your dreams, they do come true...mine are!

Wow, I come back and so many posts! smile.gif It is true, some times you have to give some music a chance and then you absolutely fall in love with it!

I can really see both points. It is good to rate songs when you have a chance because the rating is just one piece of the pie that generates some of the programming on our broadcast Highlander Radio.

I think if you hear something that you wonder why it is playing, then I would say go ahead and give it an appropriate rating. I think it is more if you hear a song that "in general" is not your cup of tea, then probably try to evalute based on the musical abilities of the group.

In the end, the rating is yours and yours alone and it will be used to hopefully make the playlists better so we thank you and appreciate you taking the time to rate songs.

On Genres we have a rather wide range of Celtic Music. I think if you could draw a circle it would encompass different parts of other Genres like Folk, New Age, Pub Music, Appalachain, Americana - but only those type of Genres that have a Celtic influenced meaning Irish, Scots, Welsh, etc.

We carved out of those Genres the music that was influenced by the Celts and by doing that we greatly expanded what we can play. We have the core Celtic Music which is firmly related to the Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Nova Scotia and Galician.

And then we have the outer fringes of the circle that can really go into other Genres, but in some way are related to the music of the Celts.

Our ultimate goal would be to push this Celtic Genre to the mainstream of America. It offers alot. Culture, dancing, music, food, friends, and spirits! beer_mug.gif

Just because all you hear on the radio is top 40 music or hip hop does not mean that it is the only music Americans should listen to. Its only what the powers that be, such as the recording industry, that wants to promote to our young people a very limited amount of types of music.
