Sliotar was born and is based in Dublin. The music is a mixture of contemporary irish music and folk rock. “They manage to mobilize a bigger and fuller sound than many a band that has twice their size. Sliotar’s fourth cd “Cirque de Sliotar” cd has finally captured the contemporary sound that has been obvious at the live shows in recent years. The band has branched from traditional music towards much more contemporary sound. Their music has been called modern irish folk. The band is also relying more and more on their on compositions, half of the material on “Cirque de Sliotar” was written by the band.
Sliotar has been going now for almost 12 years, 8 with the current line-up. In 1997, Ray MacCormac (whistle, pipes, vocals), Des Gorevan (drums and percussion) and Klaus Harvey (guitar and vocals) were asked to perform at The Porterhouse on St. Patricks day. This led to a residency and the band soon recoded their debut CD “Porterhouse Sessions”. In 2000, Klaus left to concentrate on teaching and J.P. Kallio (guitars and vocals) was asked to join.
From that time on Sliotar became a full time band and started its touring life. 3 CDs and numerous tours later Sliotar has seen most of Europe and even further. They have supported some of the biggest names in Irish music, Dervish, Lunasa, Flogging Molly and the Canadian celtic rockers, The Mahones. Today the band is more determined to bring their modern folk music to wider audience and spend minimum of 3 months of the year on the road.
When not on tour they still perform in their favourite venue, The Porterhouse, each weekend. Sliotar brings a party with them where ever they go and their live show is something to experience.
