I just don't know what is going on in the city of Boston. Late yesterday I heard reports of bombs attached to buildings, bridges and passways. Boston city streets where shutdown, a traffic nightmare insued.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachus..._called_a_hoax/

So I am sitting here having my morning cup of coffee and see what the scare is all about. Its a light bright smily face!!!

This has got to be the most stupid waste of tax payers money I have ever seen. The mayor of Boston now wants to extract $500,000 from Turner broadcasting (apparently this was somesort of promotional campaign).

Watching the news reports, you can definitely see manipulation by city officials of the media - until you actually see the "bomb" - it is really laughable.

Apparently this happened in 22 other cities, but Boston was the only city to believe that light bright smiley faces were bombs.

Hmmm, maybe this is Gotham city and the joker is going to show up with a riddle.

The only bomb that I know of in Boston is the Tunnel under the city. biggrin.gif

I guess I am not understanding why city officials and state officials are so upset. They mention these could have been terrorist devices and that in this day and age you should expect this response.

My feeling is the terrorist have won if we are going to let these things bother us. They are probably over in Osma land laughing at what fools we are. Or, maybe this is why they targeted Boston because there is obviously a lack of O2 happening because of the big dig.

These blinking little sponge bob lights where hung up 3 weeks ago and then 1 day the mayor decides to go ballastic.

I'm sorry, this is scary stuff. It is a manipulation of the media, police forces and the public. What scares me the most is not that the terrorist are planning an attack against us, but people have been transformed in their thinking.

One thing is for sure is that that even if Turner broadcasting has to pay a million dollars in fines, they got more advertising out of this than they could ever dream of - thanks in part to Mayor Mumbles Menino.

I agree with you and yeah, they did get a lot of publicity with this stunt.

It's hard to say who looks worse in this situation. The city over-reacting to blinking lights in the shape of cartoon characters, or the network promoters who think it's OK to attach blinking lights in the shape of cartoon characters to public infrastructure without asking for permission to do so.
Was it Benjamin Franklin who said something to the effect that those who would give up their freedom for security will have neither? Certainly seems to be increasingly the case in America.

I can understand the City of Boston's response - since the 9/11 flights originated from their airport due to the complacency of their idiot airport security contractors, they DON"T want to risk screwing up again, but sheesh!!!!

It's just more living proof that "common sense" has become an oxymoron.

Here are some more interesting facts about this story. All of these are from my following of the story on cnn.com.

Apparently Turner is going to pay 2 million to homeland security and several agencies for the incident.

The advertisments appeared in nine other cities with no similar chaos.

My thing is this...even if they WERE explosive devices, why did the city create all the chaos while doing their investigation? Why didn't they realize what the ads were after investigating one of the devices and then just take down the rest without making a huge deal?

And why is it that nine other cities were able to handle the situation without major incident?

It's just rediculous. I mean, I don't even consider it a hoax. A hoax to me is where someone creates a fake bomb and calls it such, or calls in a fake bomb threat. This was simply overreaction.

I suspect that someone in Boston dropped the ball and mishandled this to the point of causing the panic and decided to drop the blame on those two guys that put them up and turner brodcasting rather than take the fall themselves.

I say that this bomb defecation is just another diversion from the truth, which is that the American public is being dumped on, by the powers that be, our own government.
