Queen of Celtic Radio

Proverbs of the Moment
Gaelic Proverbs come primarily from the western Highlands and Islands of Scotland, and they have a distinctly rural or agricultural flavor which reflects the society from which they were gathered. It is to be expected that many of them pertain to the weather, to the planting of crops, and to country life in general. Others reflect the Gaelic love of company and hospitality, fear of poverty and laziness.

Gaelic Proverb:
Is e iomram an droch latha a ně latha math gu iomram.

English Translation:
Practice rowing in a rough sea and soon the rough sea will seem calm to you.

Few countries have a greater number of proverbs than has Scotland. Even today, everyday speech in Scotland is sprinkled with them. Scots are wonderfully given to this way of speaking, and the lovely Scots tongue loses much of its flavor when forced to translate their unqiue language. Those that appear in English have been preserved that way for at least 200 years!

Scottish Proverb:
Silence and thoughts hurt nae man.

App Upgrade

Posted on: 18-May-2019, 05:47 PM
Posted by: CelticRadio

Well it's been a while since we've had an update, but we have some good news for our Mobile App.

We are in the process of doing a upgrade which should provide for more current phones to be able to use and access the App. The process is starting today, so you are going to see only the basic features of the App available - such as the listening and the social part of the App. This is needed as the App will need to be reviewed by each store we have submitted it to.

Once the App is upgraded and confirmed working as expected, you will see the other features of the App come back online such as the playlist, requests, top ten, etc. Again, this is only for the App and not our desktop or mobile website.

We've also added a special icon for Android Listening which stopped functioning several months ago. All channels for Android can be found and work in this icon, so please premium members use the Android icon to tune in.

On the back-end side, we have switched up our vendor partners to StreemLion - a great new company from Canada that will be providing us with servers for Celt Rock Radio, Salty Dog Radio and Celtic Dance Tavern. For Highlander Radio, Celtic Moon and Best of Celtic Radio, the broadcast servers are now being provided by TorontoCast. We have ended our relationship with SonixCast due to issues with their servers. We hope this results in better listening for all.

Our Celtic Christmas broadcast will again be a seasonal channel from October 1st through January 15th each year. You can expect to hear the Best of Celtic Radio during the off season for this channel. The reduction and combination of these channels was needed due to the increase cost in providing Android listening to the App, which is very important for our Google Play members. Android requires special security that our broadcast software currently does not have, but we found a work around with a paid proxy vendor.

That's the update, thanks to all that support us that have allowed us to make these changes happen. We don't expect any major changes to our setup for quite a while, so we are going to begin to submit or update all of our channels on the major music directories.

The Celtic Zodiac

The Hawthorn, 5/13 - 6/9

The Hawthorn was a symbol of psychic protection due to its sharp thorns. It was also generally seen as a tree which brought good luck to the owner and prosperity to the land upon which it stood. It belongs to the trilogy of sacred Irish trees (the other two being the Oak and the Ash). Faery spirits were believed to dwell in Hawthorn hedges, which were planted as protective shrubs around fields, houses and churchyards. The Hawthorn was once thought to offer psychic protection to the traveler. The twigs would frequently be used as a curative for depression and the powdered seeds used to cure gallstones. Often used for walking sticks and to make fires, the Hawthorn also formed the Maypole around which the Celts would dance at Beltrane...the onset of Summer. The Hawthorn was associated with both the sacred and the unlucky (some holding the belief that it was from the Hawthorn that the crown of thorns used at the Crucifixion of Christ was made, for example). To destroy this tree was to incur great peril to the individual who was responsble for such an act. The Hawthorn was embodied in the character of the chief giant Yspaddaden in a Welsh romance of Kulhwch and Olwen. As a guardian figure who attempts to protect the virginity of Olwen, he is felled and the blooms of Summer soon open. Thus, the Hawthorn symbolized the advance of Summer and the defeat of Winter. In ancient times, young girls would rise at dawn in order to bathe in dew gathered from Hawthorn flowers, thus ensuring their beauty for the coming year. The blossoms, especially the white variety, were also used to decora........ more
